Pet business is booming according to a recent survey.

Brits are spending £750 million on their pets this Christmas, according to a new survey.

In a survey of 3,230 pet owners conducted by OnBuy.com, 87 percent said they will be buying their pet a Christmas present this year.

More than one quarter of respondents (27 percent) admitted to spending more on their furry friends than on their actual friends, with the majority (35 percent) saying they spend between £20 to £30 on their pets.

The responses revealed that the average amount spent on our animal companions was £16, and with 47 million pets being bought gifts, Brits will be spending over £750 million, which is certainly not a sum to be sniffed at.

Most of the cash goes on treats (35 percent), toys (34 percent) and clothes (17 percent).

Five percent of pet-loving participants even admitted to spending more on their pet than on their own father.

One percent stated they spent more money on their animals than on their mother and over one in ten (12 percent) spent decidedly less on a sibling than on a pampered pooch.

83 percent stated they wrap up their pet’s gifts, 34 percent provide their companion with a stocking and seven percent even write a Christmas card.

pet food industryThe Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) is celebrating a successful seminar. ‘Pet Food Exposed; Behind the Scenes of the Pet Food Industry’ was held on 23 September at the 21st Congress of the European Society of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition (ESVCN), in Cirencester.

Over 70 veterinary professionals and animal nutrition experts, attended the event which featured five presentations, by members of the PFMA and the European Pet Food Industry (FEDIAF).

Topics included:

  • the nutritional needs of senior pets
  • new industry guidelines for manufacturing raw pet food
  • an overview of feedingstuffs for particular nutritional purposes, otherwise known as ‘PARNUTS’
  • the work to standardise the predictive equations to determine energy density in pet food

Andrew Miller, chairman of the PFMA Veterinary & Nutrition Group, chaired the event, and the lively Q&A session afterwards, which highlighted the breadth of PFMA and FEDIAF’s work.

Sarah Hormozi, PFMA science and education manager explained: “This special event gave us the opportunity to explain how the industry operates and contributes to the science behind pet nutrition.

“Our members produce complete and complementary pet food, in various formats such as dry, wet and raw products. All of these products are subject to the same strict legislation and made in line with industry guidelines. Production of prepared pet food benefits from a growing body of research and scientific evidence and the ESVCN Congress is a great example of this.”
